Our home crossfit gym & how we go into crossfit!

I've been wanting to share more about our home crossfit gym set up since we've gotten so many questions about it over the years.
It's a long way from our "dream" workout space but for now, it's just perfect and very functional.
It's taken a few years to save up and acquire all of our current equipment, but if you're patient and keep checking in on craigslist/ebay/amazon, you can find some amazing deals.
(I'll post the links to everything I can!)

So first off, how we got into the Crossfit "cult"-
(haha)
It's no secret that health and fitness are a huge part of our lives.
We did both graduate with BS degrees in Exercise Physiology after all.
One of our favorite classes was a strength training theory and application class where we were introduced to Olympic lifting.
We were obsessed!!
I remember the first time standing up after a 75lb clean and jerk and I was like  "OMG! I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR!"
I felt like such a badass.
A few months later David started hearing about this "Crossfit craze"
It combined our love of Olympic lifting with High intensity interval training workouts and took it all to another level.
He started watching everything he could on YouTube and started throwing around the words,
WOD, METCON, AMRAP, EMOM etc.
I was like what the crap are you evening saying?! lol!
(if you didn't know, Crossfit has it's own language)
He began doing the workouts from the main website in our little apartment gym and he came home so excited to tell me what kind of different things he was learning.
I didn't jump on the bandwagon as fast mostly due to the fact that I was about to pop out Remington at any second.
Fast forward a bit, I was four months postpartum with Olive and a family in our ward had just opened up a local crossfit box in Rexburg. I signed up, lost a crap ton of weight, got stronger both mentally and physically and the addiction began!
(you can read more about that here)

The box became like a second home to us.
We brought the babies in to play while we worked out and the coaches and other athletes became like family.
We got pregnant with Frances during that time I was able to continue to workout the whole way through. At the time,  I couldn't believe how much better my pregnancy and labor and delivery was compared to the other two kids.

Just before Frances was born, our beloved Crossfit box shut down.
We were DEVESTATED!
We couldn't afford the membership for both of us at the other box in town and there wasn't any place for the kids to go while we worked out, so we decided it was in our best interest to start investing in our own equipment.

The apartment complex we lived in at the time had single garage units available to rent.
It was perfect!
We saved some money from our tax return and the first things we purchased were our olymic bars, bumper plates and our floor mats.
Our humble little space started coming together and we were able to continue training with our little family.
^^Our first home gym in Rexburg on the left ^^ and home gym after we moved to Arizona on the right^^

The hardest part about switching from a box to working out at home was not having that community of friends and coaches cheering you on and pushing you to finish the workout.
We totally miss the friendly competition too.
Other than that, we love the freedom working out at home has given us.
The kids enjoy playing around outside while we lift and they even request to be put through their own WODs.
My favorite thing though, is being able to put the all the kids in bed and be able to have our own little "date" night lift sessions.
The twinkle lights totally help set the mood, HA!
When we moved into our current home, we opted for setting up our stuff on the back porch instead of the garage because our garage got WAY to hot. There was no airflow at all and the porch seemed like the next best option.
I LOOOVE how it's come together!
We don't store everything outside all the time though- the rower is stored in a hallway closet when not in use, and our bars are stored under out bed.
We got this dry erase board from Home Depot.
We write out our workouts here as well as our 1RM for certain movements.
Our olympic bars are from Again Faster.
Mine is 15kg, his is 20kg.
Squat Rack with pull up bar is from Amazon.

50lbs of weight/metal plates from Walmart.
Our mats are technically horse stall mats that we picked up for $40 a piece from cal ranch. You can find them all over online though too.
Ab-Mat is from Rogue
10 lb dumbell is from Walmart.
We got the 35# dumb bells for free! David was doing a service project with our ward and the owner of the house they were working on was throwing them away, so he grabbed them and brought them home lol.
Speed Jump ropes are also from Rogue

Bumper plates are from Again Faster. It's 260lbs of total weight.
David made the bumper plate organizer! It was a quick and cheap projects using 2x4s and wood screws. It's so much easier to keep them organized now.
We had the box jump made by a friend of ours who had all the tools and skills lol! We paid $35!
There are tons of tutorials online to make them and its waaaay cheaper than buying them outright.
(these go on sale all the time)
Olympic Rings are from Amazon.
Our rower is from Amazon.
And that's our humble little home gym!
I know I said it above but it's taken us quite some time to save up and accumulate the equipment we have now.
Start out with one thing at a time, and pretty soon, you'll have the home gym of your dreams.
Other things we'd like to add eventually,

More kettle bells at various weights
Airdyne bike
Taller-pull up bar
Rope climb spot
Treadmill
&
A new giant garage to put it all in :)
